Premiere für Physik-StudienanfängerInnen: Abenteuerreise durch die Evolutionsgeschichte

Vom Urknall bis zum Mikrochip – Physik bestimmt ganz maßgeblich die globale und menschliche Entwicklung. Um StudienanfängerInnen zum Beginn ihrer Ausbildung das große Ganze näher zu bringen, präsentiert das Institut für Physik heuer zum ersten Mal die Bilderreise „Stationen der Zeit“ – eine szenische Tour im Rückwärtsgang durch knapp 14 Milliarden Jahre. „Die Erstsemestrigen sollen einen kompakten Überblick über die physikalischen Phänomene erhalten“, begründet Dr. Monika Mayer, Lehrende an der Uni Graz. Die Physikerin hat an der modulartigen, insgesamt 90-minütigen Dokumentation mitgearbeitet. Gerhard Huber zeichnet für die Gesamtgestaltung verantwortlich und hat an den Stationen der Erde mit eindrucksvollen Fotos halt gemacht. Der Bogen spannt sich vom Sternenhimmel Namibias über die Tierwelt Afrikas bis hin zu den Kulturen in Asien. „Es ist eine Mischung aus wissenschaftlichen, aber allgemein verständlichen Inhalten und künstlerischen Aspekten“, erklärt Mayer das Konzept.
Die Uni-Graz-Premiere findet am 24. Oktober 2013 statt, wenn „Stationen der Zeit“ den Physik-StudienanfängerInnen im Rahmen der Einführungslehrveranstaltung "Wärme und Mechanik" gezeigt wird.

Doch auch die breite Öffentlichkeit hat Gelegenheit die innovative und spannende Abenteuerreise durch die Evolutionsgeschichte hautnah zu erleben: am 27. November 2013 um 19.30 Uhr im Annenhof-Kino.

Autonomous robots and AI algorithms provide important data and high-resolution real-time images from inside a beehive. "As part of an international team, we have developed a game-changer technology for a new type of digitalised behavioural research," reports biologist Thomas Schmickl from the Artifical Life Lab at the University of Graz. The publication, which has just appeared as the cover story in the journal "Science Robotics", describes the wealth of information that can be obtained from this unique research facility.

Research for healthy aging: FWF funds Cluster of Excellence "MetAGE" with 18 million euros

Six researchers from the Field of Excellence "BioHealth" at the University of Graz, together with colleagues from the Medical Universities of Graz and Vienna, have acquired an FWF-funded "Cluster of Excellence". Now a newly formed center of excellence will be created under the leadership of the University of Graz. The aim is to gain a better understanding of healthy aging. The findings will flow directly into clinical research.
