Expertise der Uni Graz ist am Kernforschungszentrum CERN gefragt

Seit fast 15 Jahren werden am CERN in der Schweiz mit dem größten Teilchenbeschleuniger der Welt – dem Large Hadron Collider (LHC) – die kleinsten Bausteine des Universums erforscht. Doch der LHC wird in absehbarer Zeit an seine Grenzen stoßen, weil immer neue Forschungsfragen leistungsstärkere Geräte notwendig machen. Auf dem Weg dorthin ist auch die Expertise von PhysikerInnen der Universität Graz gefragt. Zum einen im Rahmen von Machbarkeitsstudien, die klären sollen, welche Technologien zu welchen neuen Erkenntnissen führen könnten (Bericht vom 31.3.22), zum anderen ist mit Simon Plätzer seit heuer erstmals ein Grazer Forscher in der Plenarversammlung des European Committee for Future Accelerators (ECFA) am CERN vertreten. Das Gremium begleitet Entscheidungen über zukünftige Teilchenbeschleuniger und Experimente in der Hochenergiephysik.

Simon Plätzer verstärkt seit Oktober 2021 den Fachbereich Theoretische Physik an der Uni Graz. Auf der Suche nach Erklärungen für nach wie vor rätselhafte Phänomene des Universums, wie etwa jenes der Dunklen Materie, forscht Plätzer an der Schnittstelle zwischen Theorie und Experiment mit Hilfe von Computersimulationen. „Mit meinen Berechnungen beschreibe ich die Dynamik einer Teilchenkollision auf allen relevanten Energieskalen“, berichtet der Physiker. Der Vergleich der Simulationen mit den Messungen am LHC macht es möglich, neue theoretische Ansätze für bislang ungelöste Fragen zu überprüfen, um das Standardmodell der Teilchenphysik, das so manche Erklärung schuldig bleibt, zu ergänzen.

This award for Austria's universities and colleges is presented by the Ministry of Science and the Ministry of Climate Protection.

Bees under observation: University of Graz provides unprecedented insights into the hive

What is going on in the combs? How many eggs is the queen laying? How much honey is there? Autonomous robots and AI algorithms provide important data and high-resolution real-time images from inside a beehive. "As part of an international team, we have developed a game-changer technology for a new type of digitalised behavioural research," reports biologist Thomas Schmickl from the Artifical Life Lab at the University of Graz. The publication, which has just appeared as the cover story in the journal "Science Robotics", describes the wealth of information that can be obtained from this unique research facility.

Research for healthy aging: FWF funds Cluster of Excellence "MetAGE" with 18 million euros

Six researchers from the Field of Excellence "BioHealth" at the University of Graz, together with colleagues from the Medical Universities of Graz and Vienna, have acquired an FWF-funded "Cluster of Excellence". Now a newly formed center of excellence will be created under the leadership of the University of Graz. The aim is to gain a better understanding of healthy aging. The findings will flow directly into clinical research.
