Nostrification
Nostrification is the recognition of a foreign degree as equivalent to an Austrian degree. Nostrification means full equivalence with the Austrian degree. It is associated with the right to use a domestic academic degree.
Initial information
For more detailed initial information on nostrification, a consultation can be arranged in the office of the Director of Studies at the University of Graz (Ms Anna Hutter).
However, the application must be submitted to the responsible Dean's Office together with all necessary documents.
Please note: It is not permitted to submit the same application for nostrification to another university in Austria at the same time or after withdrawal (§ 90 para. 2 UG).
Requirement
The requirement for nostrification is that the recognition of the foreign degree is mandatory for practising a profession or continuing education in Austria. It is checked whether an Austrian or equivalent degree is required by law for taking up a professional activity in Austria and on the basis of which (professional) regulations this is provided for.
Nostrification is only possible if the degree programme completed abroad is equivalent to a degree programme completed at the university in terms of the outcome of the overall education. The criteria for the review are the content, scope and requirements of the degree programme for which recognition is being applied for. If equivalence is basically given and only individual achievements are missing for full equivalence, individual examinations can be issued as conditions by notice, upon fulfilment of which nostrification is granted.
Please check whether nostrification is necessary or whether recognition may be sufficient. Information on both procedures can (also) be found on the official website of the Federal Ministry: Nostrifizierung (bmbwf.gv.at) or Anerkennung von Abschlüssen (bmbwf.gv.at)
Submission of application
Please make an appointment at the Dean's Office to submit the documents by e-mail. The following documents must be submitted:
- Fully completed application form
- Official photo ID (passport, will be returned at the submission date)
- Any documents relating to name changes (e.g. marriage certificate) in the original or certified copy + certified translation
- Original certificate confirming the proper completion of the foreign degree programme or the original certificate confirming the award of the foreign academic degree (e.g. diploma)
- Transcript of records/certificates/module description in the original or certified copy + certified translation
- Bachelor's thesis/diploma thesis/Master's thesis/dissertation (including a summary in German or English)
- Proof that nostrification is mandatory for practising the profession or continuing training in Austria (e.g. confirmation from the Chamber of Pharmacists)
- Proof of payment of the nostrification fee of € 150 (payment slip will be sent electronically after contacting the Dean's Office)
The documents must be submitted in the original or as a certified copy, the award certificate (diploma) always in the original. Foreign-language documents must be accompanied by a certified copy in German or English. Foreign documents must be duly notarised (important information on notarisation).
Nostrification is issued by the responsible Dean of Studies in a notification. The notification must specify which domestic degree the foreign degree corresponds to and which domestic academic degree the applicant is authorised to use in place of the foreign academic degree on the basis of the nostrification. The copy of the decision shall be noted on the document submitted as proof of the foreign degree.
