Application for the doctoral programme

The admission to the doctoral programme is determined by an admissions committee consisting of three members (supervisor, head of the doctoral school, dean of studies). The decision-making may take some time. Therefore, we kindly ask you to observe the following application deadline:

Application deadline for the winter semester 2025 starts on July 1, and ends on October 31, 2025.

Everything I need to know before starting a doctoral programme

Step 1

To apply for admission to the doctoral programme, you first need a research topic and a supervisor.
Supervision can only be provided by habilitated members of the relevant doctoral school.
In consultation with the supervisor, the "Registration for the doctoral programme at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and supervision agreement" must be recorded in writing and the relevant signatures (for the red arrows) must be obtained from the student (supervisor, mentor, any co-supervisor, any person involved, head of institute, head of doctoral school). A short synopsis of no more than one page must be attached to the application.

 

 

Step 2

The second step is to apply for the doctoral programme using the application tool of the University of Graz.
The following documents are mandatory for this online application:

  • Registration for the doctoral programme at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and supervision agreement (incl. a one-page short exposé)
  • Current photo/photograph
  • Photo ID (passport or identity card)
  • E-Card for all Austrian persons
  • Proof of completed studies
    • Foreign documents must be translated and duly notarised (exception for translation: German and English documents)
    • Information on notarisation
  • List of courses attended in the previous degree programme/research or study focus (proof of success, transcript, diploma supplement)
  • Proof of language proficiency
  • Academic curriculum vitae

 

Step 3

The created application in the applicant management tool must be submittedso that the application can be viewed and processed by the Examination Office.
The application can be submitted even if not all documents have been uploaded in full.
