Hundert junge WissenschafterInnen aus der Molekularbiologie präsentieren an der Uni Graz ihre Arbeiten

Zu einem „Forschungsgipfel“ treffen sich von 10. bis 11. Dezember 2012 an der Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz junge ForscherInnen aus der Molekularbiologie. Die über 100 TeilnehmerInnen an der Veranstaltung sind Angehörige der Doktoratskollegs (DK) „Molecular Enzymology“ von NAWI Graz und „Molecular Mechanisms of Cell Signaling“ des Vienna Biocenter sowie die LeiterInnen der einzelnen Forschungsgruppen.

 

Das Wiener DK unter der Leitung von Prof. Manuela Baccarini wird von 14 ForscherInnen der Max F. Perutz Laboratories (MFPL), der Universität Wien und der Medizinischen Universität Wien getragen. Univ.-Prof. Dr. Ellen Zechner vom Institut für Molekulare Biowissenschaften der Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz ist Sprecherin des Grazer DKs und freut sich auf einen intensiven Austausch auf hohem wissenschaftlichem Niveau: „Die MFPL beheimaten international hoch anerkannte ForscherInnen, die mit modernsten Methoden in der Biochemie, Molekularbiologie, Zellbiologie und Genetik forschen und der Verwendung von unterschiedlichen Modellsystemen Signalprozesse auf molekularer Ebene studieren“, so Zechner.

Während der Tagung werden ausgewählte DissertantInnen beider DKs über spannende Forschungsergebnisse berichten. Die übrigen JungforscherInnen präsentieren auf Postern die Ziele und Ergebnisse der verschiedenen DK-Projekte. „Dabei bietet die Veranstaltung den DoktorandInnen eine ausgezeichnete Gelegenheit zum Erfahrungsaustausch mit spannenden Diskussionen“, unterstreicht Zechner.

 

Das DK „Molekulare Enzymologie“ wird von 21 Forschungsgruppen der Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz und der TU Graz getragen und ist Teil des interuniversitären Forschungsschwerpunkts „Molekulare Enzymologie und Physiologie“. Die Dissertationsprojekte stellen ein umfassendes Forschungsprogramm zur Entdeckung neuer Enzyme, der Aufklärung ihrer molekularen Struktur, der Entschlüsselung der physiologischen Funktion sowie deren biotechnologischer Nutzung dar. Gefördert vom Österreichischen Wissenschaftsfonds FWF zielen DKs darauf ab, die begabtesten Studierenden für eine internationale wissenschaftliche Karriere vorzubereiten.

Der Forschungsgipfel Wien-Graz ist ein eindrucksvolles Beispiel für die Bedeutung und den Erfolg von NAWI Graz, der strategischen Partnerschaft von Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz und TU Graz in den Naturwissenschaften.

What is going on in the combs? How many eggs is the queen laying? How much honey is there? Autonomous robots and AI algorithms provide important data and high-resolution real-time images from inside a beehive. "As part of an international team, we have developed a game-changer technology for a new type of digitalised behavioural research," reports biologist Thomas Schmickl from the Artifical Life Lab at the University of Graz. The publication, which has just appeared as the cover story in the journal "Science Robotics", describes the wealth of information that can be obtained from this unique research facility.

Research for healthy aging: FWF funds Cluster of Excellence "MetAGE" with 18 million euros

Six researchers from the Field of Excellence "BioHealth" at the University of Graz, together with colleagues from the Medical Universities of Graz and Vienna, have acquired an FWF-funded "Cluster of Excellence". Now a newly formed center of excellence will be created under the leadership of the University of Graz. The aim is to gain a better understanding of healthy aging. The findings will flow directly into clinical research.
